Extell is building the 74-story super-luxury condo/hotel tower .Don’t worry, says Extell Development Co. chief Gary Barnett — it’s coming! Even though it doesn’t yet look that way.
“It” is Carnegie 57, the endlessly awaited, 74-story super-luxury condo/hotel tower Extell is building on a vast site across from Carnegie Hall, from midblock West 57th Street to West 58th between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
“In just a couple of weeks we’ll be poking our heads above the sidewalk,” Barnett said yesterday. “Come by in another two or three weeks and you’ll see us above grade.”
After Extell spent years assembling and excavating the site, Barnett told the New York Times on May 25 that the project would be “going vertical in three weeks.”
Once completed, the project designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc — which also includes a 5-star Park Hyatt Hotel, as we first reported — will make an impressive addition to the Midtown skyline.
But if “going vertical” means steel rising and tower cranes whirring, we saw none of that yesterday when we peeked in through an open gate, more than three months after the Times story — only a maze of foundation and infrastructure below sidewalk level. Work was being done but not nearly at the pace Barnett had seemed to suggest.
